Starting the descent to Petani beach

Going down the hair pin bends to Petani beach

next bend on the road looking down on Petani beach

Having made the adrenalin rush that is driving down the mountain roads and hair pin bends to Petani beach, the first Taverna you come to is called Grasuia's Taverna. You can't miss it, precious little else on the whole beach, except the other Taverna 50 yards away, which each time I have visited seems to have been shut. There are also a few houses most of which are in the development stage!! Do not let this put you off going, it is worth the trip. The sea bass at under 5 euros is a bargain! and although farmed and not wild caught the taste is still wonderful. (well, what do you expect for aprox £3.00!!) I hope you like olive oil because your Greek salad will be swimming in it. And don't ask for a menu, there isn't one. It is all on a board propped up in the entrance.

I can also highly recommend the calamari here, the portion was generous to say the least, and tasted delicious. We just cannot capture the flavour here in the UK. I know freshness is the key, but I think it is more than that, as I had calamari in other tavernas and it was not quite the same. Next visit I am going to ask if I can watch the preparation!

I hope the couple featured right in Mimika's Taverna enjoyed their time together, it did seem to me that she was doing all the work, laughing at his jokes, smiling and showing real interest in everything he said..........and he was Mr Supercool the whole time!

The breeze block loos are behind the bar area next to the kitchen whose back walls are made of rush matting. There have been improvements made this year and the loos now boast new PVC doors.

A couple enjoying the food at Petani.

Much of the menu is bar-b-q'd over charcoal so the heat must be killing in there, hence the matting walls. Frankly, this place gets my vote, and in my opinion a "must" place to visit. And no, I have not been paid to say that!! Mimika will greet you with a warm smile and speaks excellent English. She is friendly and happy to chat to tourists, this can slow the service down a bit but what the heck, you are on holiday, in a beautiful place, the food is great, the prices are unbelievably reasonable, and you are wearing dark glasses ..........err......where was I? Just chill and be happy!!!

The beach is wide a mixture of hard sand and pebbles and beautifully kept, the crystal clear blue waters of the bay are warm so if you love beaches you will love this. If you stand still in waist deep water near the rocks on the edge of the bay you will soon be surrounded by small fish.

The road leading to the beach is tarmac but great fun too!! Look out for HGV lorries and cement trucks in the hills before you get to the coastal approach, there is a quarry near by and tourist hire cars slow them down which they find very annoying. Understandable when you are preparing your truck to take a one in eight climb complete with hair pin bends and 40 plus tonnes on board.

Looking down on Petani bay, it's a long way down!!

To be reduced to a crawl at the bottom of the climb by a small hire car is not an option for them so this means they will overtake you rather than slow down. So, either pull over for them or ............go for it, put some distance between you and enjoy the adrenalin rush!! besides that itch in the back of your neck having a truck parked on your rear fender as you go down the other side is not desirable!
